This test will help military advisors decide what jobs you are best suited to work.  If you score high enough, you will be able to choose what branch of the military you prefer. You will also get to choose what specific job you would like to do.  A high score can even mean officer opportunities.

If you are considering a career in the military, you need to take the ASVAB seriously.  The ASVAB is a multiple-choice test that allows the military to see your level of comprehension in basic academic and scientific concepts.

This is not an IQ test.  It is more of a test to gauge your potential.  The ASVAB is broken down into a series of timed tests.  Each section will test your knowledge on a different subject.

Arithmetic Reasoning

This is basic math 101.  Nothing too difficult in this section, but no calculators are allowed.

General Science

Chemistry, biology, and physics all fall into this category.  You are going to want to be familiar with these subjects.

Mathematics Knowledge

This is Math 202.  You will be dealing with high school level math.  Algebra and geometry will be covered in this section.

Mechanical Comprehension

This part can be difficult if you are not prepared.  In this section, your knowledge on subjects such as physics and mechanics are tested.

Paragraph Comprehension

In this part, you read a paragraph and then answer a question regarding its meaning.  A little practice and this part can be a lot easier.

Auto and Shop Information

Here you are tested on your ability to recognize shop tools.  You will also be tested on your understanding of automotive systems.

Vocabulary Knowledge

Here you will see a word and have to pick out the synonym that resembles its meaning the closest.  Some of the questions have the word used in a sentence.

Electronics Information

Electrical knowledge is tested in this part.  Circuitry and resistance are covered.

Assembling Objects

You will have to choose the correctly assembled version of an object from pictures of its parts.

There are two versions of the ASVAB test:  the original version which uses pen and paper, and a new CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) version of ASVAB that is performed on computer.  Both types require you to study the same information, the only real difference being the mode of entry.

Some branches require a higher ASVAB score than others.  The coast guard requires a high school diploma and an ASVAB score of 40 or higher to enroll.

The Army and National Guard have a little more relaxed recruitment policy.  You can apply with a GED and your ASVAB score only has to be 31.  The Air Force is known for not accepting new recruits until their ASVAB score is 50 or higher.  31 – 49 are the average ASVAB scores.

With this score, you can join the infantry and still do a number of other jobs.  If you desire to fly or skip to officer school, you are going to want to score closer to 89.

There are a lot of ASVAB help books and ASVAB websites that claim to help.  Many of them are helpful to an extent.  It is important to have up to date information.  Your ASVAB score controls the direction of your military career.  Don’t trust outdated testing sites.
